 Upgrading Your Software

This is a good time, while things may be a little slower than usual, to "Clean House." Time to check your software and see if you need to upgrade.

Some companies offer you free upgrades of their software several times a year depending on whether or not they have made changes or improvements. Other companies offer upgrades annually for a fee.

Now is the perfect time to go to those company sites and see if they have free upgrades available. Place a folder under favorites and call it upgrades, then bookmark each of these sites to that folder. This way you will have an easy way to get back to it if you need to.

Companies like Microsoft offer what they call a patch. These are not exactly upgrades; they are intended to fix something that might prove to be a problem in the future or to prevent a security problem. But other companies like Adobe offer upgrades directly on their website. You need to look for the support section or their product section and then see if any of the fixes or upgrades is necessary for your computer. Incidentally, you'll find the latest VisualTour update to version 4.0.6 at www.visualtour.com/downloads

This is also a good time to backup some files and delete others, but before you delete make sure you won't need them in the future.

One way to remove files from your computer is to take old files, which you no longer need, and burn them onto a CD for safekeeping. Pictures of houses that you sold during the first 9 months of last year, for example, can be saved on a cd. If you happen to list that house again you will have the old pictures along with some new ones. Just be sure to clearly label everything so that you know what each disc contains and you don't have to put it into the computer to check.
